Skiathos

There is a resort on the Greek island of Skiathos called Aghia Paraskevi where some of the hotels are absolutely beautiful with glass walls virtually on three sides, right at the pool’s edge so that the building is reflected in the water. The stupendous resort of Koukounaries looks nice too with its green trees all around.

Skiathos Town is another great resort with fabulous views from some of the studio accommodation. The hotels and self-catering studios on the Greek Island of Skiathos are beautifully clean and bright.

The majority of Skiathos’ 60+ beaches have fine white sand which is quite unusual for a Greek island. Good snorkeling can be had. The azure waters are warm. All the beaches are fringed by scenic pine covered woodlands.

Koukounaries is reputed to be the finest beach in all the Aegean. The swimming there is wonderful as the water is shallow – ideal for families with small children. In the heat of the day, one can lie under the shady pine trees. The beach is almost a kilometre long.

If you prefer beaches with lots of people, you might choose to stay in the resorts of Platanias, Paraskevi or Megali Ammos. Troulos Beach is a very popular beach and has accommodation behind it in the Troulos Valley.

There is a good Health Centre in Skiathos Town which offers immediate first aid facilities with English speaking doctors.

If you go to Skiathos in July and August when it is pretty crowded, if you look around you can still find some peaceful places to avoid the hustle and bustle. Easter is a good time to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and a great time for walking. Even winter in Skiathos is a good time to visit as the island greens after the dry, dusty summer months. The walks are even more beautiful and the locals have more time to be relaxed and friendly.

Santorini

There is a great walk along the cliffs of Santorini, a fantastic exercise and change of scene for those of you who live or work in big inland cities and towns. Hundreds of thousands of visitors went to the island of Santorini last year and had a wonderful time. As always on the Greek Islands there were sunsets…..lots of sublime sunsets. There were many nights when the sun was really showing off. You should go there to see for yourselves. On a nightly basis Santorini puts its magic spell on visitors, many of whom will never forget the sunsets they see. It is one of the most fantastic shows on earth….and it is different every night. In fact…even for people who live on Santorini it often feels too surreal for words. And sometimes…..well, sometimes the show continues well into the night because soon after sunset there is a full moon and very special things happen on Santorini on the night of a full moon. The beauty is blinding.

In the holiday resort of Imerovigli on the island of Santorini there are many hotels to choose from. Imerovigli is a traditional village situated on a high cliff. In front of the village is located an enormous rock called Skaros. Until 1800 Skaros was part of the land and had a castle on it where all the administration offices of the island were situated. The village was almost totally destroyed by the earthquake in 1956, and the cliff-edge houses were abandoned, but a tourist trade started up again in the 1970s. Today Imerovigli is a beautiful and quiet village, and also one of the top areas in Santorini for accommodation.

Kamari is another holiday resort on Santorini. It was completely rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake. It is now a tourist hotspot situated on the southeast side of the island of Santorini. The area is famous for its beautiful extensive beach, and for its green landscape. On the beachfront you can find hotels, restaurants, bars and many shops to suit all tastes and budgets. Also in Kamari a Jazz Festival takes place every year, in the lovely atmosphere of its outdoor cinema, so if you are a jazz fan you might enjoy a holiday there. Kamari also boasts a church which was built in 1100. The best time to visit the church is on August 15 during the feast of the Virgin Mary when a large festival is held there. Also, on September 24 another church in Kamari celebrates with a festival where food and wine are plentiful.

The holiday resort of Megalocori on Santorini is situated by a beautiful, sleepy, whitewashed Greek town, so it sounds like a holiday here would be very relaxing, doesn’t it? The name Megalocori means big village. Beaches are within easy reach of the town, and you can sample the traditional Greek food in the lovely little taverns. The area is also well known for its wine making, so great evenings could be had by all who stay there. The nightlife is quite laid back (not for party people) but lovely for couples and families.

Samos

There are several great deals to be had on the Greek island of Samos. There are many holiday resorts with small hotels, some with lovely views, most with big pools. Samos is situated in the Eastern Aegean. It is a beautifully mountainous island where in places the green forested mountains seem to slope right down to the curving sandy beaches and pale turquoise sea. Samos Island in Greece is the most visited island of the North Eastern Aegean Islands. Nevertheless it retains its beauty and calm places.

On Samos Island you can experience several things ranging from historical fun to sun. There are options for all sorts of tourists. It is advisable to rent a car so that you can explore the island easily. You could visit the Samos Museum in Samos Town, probably one of the most interesting museums in Greece. A large number of pieces from Archaic, Hellenistic and Roman Periods are presented at the museum.

In Pythagorion, another of the holiday resorts on Samos, you could visit the impressive Temple of Hera and the famous Pythagoras Cave, the place where the famous philosopher used to live and study! Rhodes

Cuba is pretty beautiful with its unusual landscape – palm trees in misty swamps, yellow stone escarpments. Havana is the capital city – “Our Man in Havana” and all that. If you like old American cars this is the place to go on holiday to see pink Cadillacs and many very colorful cars. Take a look at a car park there and compare it with one in U.K. – every bright strong color under the sun compared with our dull silvers, blacks, reds and not much else. Cuban music is exciting too if you like that sort of thing. There are some unusual buildings in Havana with colonnades along the pavements. There are gardens of palm trees within some of these buildings which are rather nice.

The Greek island of Paxos can be found 14 kilometers south of Corfu. It is surely a very beautiful island, with the mainland of Greece only 20 kilometers away. Paxos covers an area of some 19 square kilometers. This island has no airport, can only be reached by ferry boat and therefore has been able to protect itself from the strain of modern tourism. It is an island of endless olive groves. The eastern coastline of Paxos is gentle compared with the west coast which is bold and abrupt, with caves, arches and sheer cliffs. The capital is Gaios a picturesque village built around a port. You will find the pace is still unhurried, very relaxing with genuine friendly hospitality at its best.

The holiday resort of Magazia is one of the interesting places on Paxos. The word ‘magazi’ means shop, and presumably Magazia had enough shops to merit its name!!

Magazia is really a hamlet rather than a village but it does have a mini-market and a couple of tavernas, along with a bar. The mini-market has a pretty garden out front which is charming. Better than Londis!!

Accommodation is mostly self catering in villas and apartments in the traditional surroundings. Very cost-effective. Magical Mykonos

The Greek island of Mykonos is situated in the South Aegean Sea. The holiday resorts there have beautiful pools with lovely pool-side areas, some shaded from the sun. The beaches are sandy and slope very gently towards the sea making the waters very safe for children and swimmers. There are ancient sites to see on Mykonos too, some seemingly out in the wilds surrounded by poppies. Very pretty. Many beautiful yachts anchor off the coast, and some of the hotels are right at the edge of the sea with wonderful views of mountains beyond in the distance. Some cruise ships pull in at Stefanos Beach, Mykonos. There are also very smart apartments to accommodate you. The beautiful Greek windmills are on Mykonos as on many of the other Greek islands. The hotels and their gardens are very well looked after. And….how about a little midnight bathing in a pool when there is a full moon!!

It seems that whichever hotel you stay at in the resort of Agios Ioannis the service will be excellent and you will be able to enjoy spectacular views. The restaurants there have received good reviews too, being welcoming, they say, with great food and which are great value for money. Apparently Agios Ioannis is not expensive at all. Sound like your sort of place??!! The resort is also relaxing and romantic.

In the area of Mykonos Town holiday resort there are lots of lovely old windmills, and buildings right down into the water and up on top of the cliffs. Picturesque.

Most of the accommodation in Mykonos Town is self-catering apartments, studios and rooms to rent. The town is certainly very quaint and pretty to look at, with eating areas half indoors, half out, which gives a very nice feeling. You can eat at a table under the trees. Some of the areas around the hotel pools appear like platforms out into the calm sea. The sea water is hardly more disturbed than the water of the pool. The views from the hotel balconies are perfect - a bay encircled on one half by white buildings with maybe a cruise ship alongside the harbor wall. Palm trees. Idyllic really. There are romantic seaside cafes, where you can sit and watch the beautiful sunsets on the horizon across the sea. So peaceful, and great for a de-stressing holiday.

Ornos holiday resort on Mykonos is a small heaven, with a few tavernas, hotels and rooms. It is only 3.5 km from Mykonos Town. The tavernas are fantastic day and night. If you want more of a laid back atmosphere but close to the night life, then Ornos is the place! With transportation close at hand there is easy access to places you would like to see and explore. The food is wonderful in the tavernas where the atmosphere is great too. Holidaymakers who once go to Ornos on Mykonos tend to go back again, which is excellent recommendation.

The resort of Plati Yiabos is one of the most popular beaches of the island of Mykonos, filling with thousands of people during summer time attracted by the golden sand and the wonderful turquoise crystalline waters.

Plati Yiabos is a fully organized beach, with many hotels lined up along the front. Here many people walk straight down to the beach from their rooms. Quite a nice long beach. You can enjoy a drink on the beach on loungers with seats and table.

From Plati Yiabos, regular taxi-boats go to the beaches of the southern coast of Mykonos. You could hire one of these for a change one day perhaps.

Lesbos - Lesvos

The Greek island of Lesbos is known for beautiful beaches, vast wildlife, excellent cuisine and unspoiled landscape, a true paradise for those who want to experience the real Greece. Lesbos is virtually unaffected by the mass tourism that has turned other islands into amusement parks. It is the capital for cultural tourism, more than just another Greek island. For the Greek island traveler who is worried about not having enough to do, Lesbos is the perfect holiday destination. It has more varieties of birds and wildflowers than anywhere else in Europe, two of the finest art museums in Greece, and some of the warmest friendliest people of all Greece.

Lesbos has been a favorite location for artists, writers and romantics. Its natural attractions include a petrified forest, the unique Hot Springs, and health inducing spas that are dotted around Lesbos. The holiday resort of Anaxos is famous for its ambience. It takes half an hour to walk the length of the beach. Another holiday resort on the island of Lesbos is Molyvos. It is the best destination to go to for cultural tourism on Lesbos. It also has excellent nightlife and galleries. Molyvos attracts visitors who are sensitive to culture and tradition but are still there to have a good time.

It is a truly amazing town. As you approach it by road you really are unprepared for the dramatic first view you get when you come around that last bend. The town of Molyvos is to be found on a small mountain topped by a dramatic medieval castle. This castle has connections with Achilles during the Trojan wars so lots of ancient history there, like stepping back in time in fact.

The town of Molyvos is built of stone houses and shops which surround the castle and follow the coast to one of the most beautiful harbors in Greece. Tourists here are a more sophisticated breed, some of them actually carrying books of Greek Mythology and Histories of the island of Lesbos.

The beach resort of Skala Kalloni on Lesbos offers a great deal to visitors, especially families which enjoy the long beach with shallow waters. Sardines caught here are said to be some of the best in Greece and the daily catch is brought into the quaint but busy village harbor. In the village of Skala Kalloni bread is baked fresh throughout the day. This would be lovely for visitors on self-catering holidays. The Wetland of Kallonis Gulf is one of the most significant parts of the ecological assets of Lesbos. This area consists of a mosaic of salt pits, small rivers and estuaries, reedy patches, pine-tree woods and olive groves. You can see some beautiful birds there. The Wetlands give natural shelter and a great place for rare and protected species of birds to have their young. The best times of the year for bird-watching in Skala Kalloni resort is in spring or in autumn. The area also contributes to the preservation of bio-diversity. The Wetland has an aesthetic significance too.

Lefkas - Lefkada

Lefkas is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea on the west coast of Greece, connected to the mainland by a long causeway and floating bridge. The principal town of the island is Lefkada. It is in the north of the island, about 20 minutes drive by car from Aktion National Airport.

Nidri is the largest holiday resort on the island of Lefkas. It is set in a sheltered position with views across to Skorpios – once owned by Aristotle Onassis, as well as views to the Greek mainland.

The island of Lefkas has a typical Mediterranean climate; hot summers and cool winters, especially in the mountains.

Apparently the cleanliness of the accommodation in Nidri is top notch, and the apartments are lovely, very well maintained including their gardens. The apartments are in a peaceful location with fantastic views of the mountains, and there are plenty of sun-beds for all.

The resort of Nidri is very cosmopolitan and the restaurants are plentiful, with a very wide range of prices to suit everyone’s pocket. A local bus service runs reliably and the stops are ample on the main Nidri high street. It is very pleasant and inexpensive to hire a small boat for the whole day and sail around the islands of the Ionian Sea, stopping off for a meal somewhere en route (or should that be en voyage?).

Nidri holiday resort is centrally located so it is great as a jumping off point to visit other places which interest you.

In the holiday resort of Aghios Ioannis on Lefkas you will find a golden sandy beach which is nothing short of spectacular, azure waters contrasting alluringly with lush green mountains, overlooked by the most important monastery of Lefkas. Aghios Ioannis is an enticingly beautiful and idyllic backwater, less than a 10 minute drive from Lefkada Town.

In spite of its amazing beach, surprisingly little tourist development has taken place here, being limited to a handful of properties scattered amongst the olive groves that border the coastline at Aghios Ioannis, and a few places to eat and drink along its shore. The beach itself at this holiday resort stretches for miles and ranges from glorious golden sands at the western end to wild windswept sand dunes dotted with old windmills – once powered by the steady winds that are a trademark of Lefkas. This is a terrific spot for water sports and the water sports centre in Aghios Ioannis specializes in the increasingly popular kite-surfing. If this appeals to your adventurous spirit, perhaps a holiday in the resort of Aghios Ioannis on Lefkas is the destination for you.

Kool Kos

The Greek island of Kos is very well organized and has everything in terms of tourism infra-structure. The various charms and beauties of Kos are not visible at first sight but after a while the picturesque villages and the fine beaches amaze all visitors.

Sandy beaches and rich history are the two major attractions of Kos, along with vivid nightlife. The Archeological Museum stands in the heart of Kos Town. It houses various exhibits dating mainly from the archaic, Hellenistic and Roman Times. Numerous interesting fine mosaics, ceramics, statues and other findings are on exhibition there.

The holiday resort of Kardamena on Kos is located on the south coast of the island by the Aegean Sea. Kardamena has grown greatly over the years as a holiday resort, but what hasn’t changed and makes people visiting this resort very happy over and over again is the locals’ genuine hospitality. Kos airport is only a 7 kilometer taxi ride away from Kardamena. It only takes 10 minutes.

In Kos Town you can see a plane tree which is said to be 2,400 years old. It is the tree that Hippocrates himself planted. The lack of hills on Kos has helped to make cycling a very popular Kos holiday activity and there are innumerable bicycle rental outlets and even some dedicated cycling roads between the big hotels, so if you enjoy cycling it would be very easy to get around.

Psalidi is quite a beautiful holiday resort. There are nice shady places to eat or drink al fresco, and wonderful views across the sea from the ancient ruins. The palm trees cast perfect shadows on the road, and there is a picturesque windmill for holidaymakers to see and photograph. Some of the hotels are very grand, and then, if you like goats, you can make friends with them too. And…..you could see huge octopus hung up to dry, not a sight you see every day perhaps.

Some of the hotels have outdoor restaurants by a deep pool, and beautiful seating areas on long verandahs with fantastic views. The staff is attentive, helpful and friendly. Take care though if you need some support getting in and out of your bath as some accommodation does not have separate shower cubicles and there are no grab rails. You need to find out the details of all this before booking any room. Cleanliness however is top notch.

Tingaki holiday resort lies just away from Kos Town on the North part of the island of Kos. It is a long 10 km of white sand beach. The shallow waters make it ideal for children and an easy place to swim and have fun with the waves. There are some lovely views from the higher ground.

Zante - Zakynthos

The Greek island of Zante has an interesting town overlooked by a medieval castle, beautiful mountains covered with pine tree forests, charming traditional villages with mansions in narrow alleys, a Marine Park which protects the endangered species of the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), many restaurants and tavernas, cafes, bars and night clubs.

Olives, vineyards and citrus are the main occupation of the local inhabitants.
Make sure Zante is on your hit list this summer.

Some of the Greek nights at Aghios Sostis holiday resort on Zante are a unique experience with much Greek dancing and a real Greek atmosphere. This resort has all the facilities of a main resort, and you can get married there if you like and are looking for a ‘different’ wedding. But it is quiet and unspoiled.

The holiday resort of Alikes on the Greek island of Zante has a few unique places of interest which are well worth a visit, but Alikes is less developed than some of the resorts in the South of Zante. However, the resort has grown up somewhat recently and you will find karaoke bars which you will either love or hate. Horse and carriages have replaced taxis and will provide free transport to local restaurants.

Alykanas is a very similar holiday resort to Alikes. Staff in the accommodation is amazing and can’t do enough for you, and there are spacious and comfortable rooms to be had.

The holiday resort of Argassi combines some of the best features of the other resorts on Zante. There is mini golf available in the resort too. Some accommodation is located up steep hills though so if you are thinking of making a booking, and climbing is not your forte, make sure in the first instance about the location of the hotel or studios.

Kalamaki resort is a good location on the island of Zante. Water sports are banned here because of the loggerhead turtles on the beach, giving peace and quiet for holidaymakers.

The resort of Tsilivi, although well developed and one of the main resorts on the island of Zante, around it the countryside remains spectacular with fields of poppies, olive trees and wild flowers. The Greek island of Corfu is located just off the West coast of Greece. It enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate and has excellent beaches, which make it a popular holiday destination. Compared with other Greek islands, Corfu is very green. Hot, dry summers with winter rain create lush vegetation. Most of this vegetation consists of over 2 million olive trees.

There are many holiday resorts on the island of Corfu; too many to mention all of them here, so let’s give you a taste with a few of them. They are very similar anyway.

Kassiopi is a great resort for people looking for something a bit livelier than most, but still a Greek village based around a fishing port. There are numerous bays and some rocky coves in Kassiopi resort, ideal for swimming and sunbathing, and all within walking distance of the accommodation. Many good tavernas and 2 nightclubs are there on the harbour front and several ‘music’ bars which are not too loud. Fishermen still bring home the morning catch down at the harbor in Kassiopi in their traditional manner.

You could rent a boat for a day to explore the sandy beaches and pretty villages in the vicinity of Kassiopi.

Kassiopi beach and the rocks are clean. The old harbor at this resort is a godsend for families with disco-loving children. The remains of Kassiopi Castle have Roman foundations which would be interesting to see. You can walk amongst the ruins and from the top ramparts there is an excellent view of the Albanian coast. There are also trips that leave the harbor each day to Corfu Town and other areas of interest on Corfu.

There is a wide choice of cuisine in Kassiopi if you don’t like Greek food, from Mexican, Chinese, and Italian in addition to the more traditional Greek. During the evenings many of the bars play music videos on widescreen, and also show films. It is interesting to sit in a harbor front bar, have a cocktail or two and watch the hustle and bustle. The village square in Kassiopi is the place for teenagers to ‘hang out’ at night. You can also walk to a beautiful long bay with clear waters – a very quiet place – in only 20 min from Kassiopi. There is a diving school too for those who enjoy lively activities. Kassiopi has many shops, some selling leather goods, some selling good lace and linen, and some selling ceramics. There are two internet cafes if you must use the internet whilst on holiday. In Kassiopi resort tourists shops are happy to exchange money for you, and there are also two cash machines in the centre of the town at Kassiopi. And…here’s a new thing for you – there are many public bar pools which are free to use in Kassiopi. The only requirement is that you buy a drink or two there. Many have children’s pools as well. In addition there is a good playground for children in the centre of town. Kassiopi is fairly flat and there are no steep hills – good for those who cannot get about very well. There is also a 24 hour surgery.

The holiday resort of Acharavi on Corfu boasts something for everyone, as do some of the other resorts. It most certainly appears inviting from photos. It is a busy and lively resort set on the North coast of Corfu. Acharavi is not only a holiday resort though, but is the main town for the North of Corfu, and has all the main facilities found in a modern town. In this resort too there are plenty of tavernas and bars and a good, long sandy beach. Behind the resort, set in the hills, are excellent walking paths. These form part of what is called the Corfu trail. Many tavernas in Acharavi serve everything to eat from a snack to a three course Greek meal, so these could stand you in good stead if you chose to stay in less than Full Board accommodation. From the tavernas on the beach you can watch the sunset. Very romantic and therapeutic for a holiday, don’t you think? Acharavi has a water sports centre offering water skiing and ringo rides, and is also for parasailing from the back of a speedboat, so there is plenty to do if it is activities you are looking for. You can also hire small motor boats. Acharavi is a family holiday resort, and there is a resident English hairdresser which might please the ladies. There are several places of interest around – Roman baths to see, and the remains of a Doric temple near a neighboring town. This temple is said to have probably been built as a dedication to Apollo. A Water Park is also in the area which is worth a visit if you have young ones. This can provide you with a fun day out as water parks are always a good choice in the warm summer weather in Corfu.

Lying tucked away several miles down a twisty road and 30 km from Corfu Town, the lovely little holiday resort of Aghios Georgios can be found. The beautiful areas around this resort in the gorgeous north west of the island of Corfu show why Corfu is reputed to be the greenest of the Greek islands. There are tall pencil-shaped Cypress trees and endless groves of unusually tall olive trees, which give much of the island of Corfu a covering of green. This beautiful pastoral area at Aghios Georgios with its lovely sandy beach attracts people for holidays wanting a break from their modern stress filled lives. In addition, if you are a very good swimmer, there is a nearly deserted island to swim out to. The swim takes about an hour, and glorious unspoiled deserted beaches can be found on the other side. This island is stunning and very romantic. Also there are various places near Arilas that you could take a walk to.

The Main town of the island of Corfu is one of the most interesting cities in Greece due to the heavy influence of the Venetians who for centuries controlled the island. There are ancient Roman buildings still in evidence in Corfu Town. There is also an excellent archaeological museum. The population is quite cosmopolitan compared with the other Greek islands. The town is an interesting mixture of old tavernas, new cafes, discos, clubs and shops of all types plus an amazing old city that is a protected area. There are many historical buildings to see that make walking the streets of this city a pleasure. Corfu Town really resembles an Italian city, so if you like Italy you will like Corfu Town holiday resort. It has one of the most attractive town squares in all of Greece with trees planted long ago by the French.

In the resort of Kalami, Kalami bay is set nestling below the North East Corfu hills and is famous for its beaches. Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands. It is located at the southern edge of the Aegean Sea.

Crete can boast very many ancient monuments, a great nightlife , and some unique beaches. It sounds ideal for a holiday in the Greek islands, doesn’t it!

As well as very many ancient monuments, there are very many holiday resorts on Crete. One of them, Almyrida is a lovely fishing village and seaside resort in west Crete. You will find that most resorts were set up around or near the old traditional villages on the island. In Almyrida (as in many other resorts) there is highly-rated holiday accommodation available. Most hotels on Crete appear to have beautiful private pools right by the sea, for example.

The Almyrida resort is a good holiday destination for families. It sports quite a number of places to eat right on the waterfront, so for those holidaying Half Board, Bed & Breakfast or Self Catering it could be a very suitable and convenient place to stay. There are the usual traditional tavernas which serve the local catch of the day with homegrown salads and vegetables grown locally. You will find it hard to find fresher food than that anywhere else in the world. There are also several café style coffee bars at Almyrida which change into cocktail bars at dusk. This resort has remained small enough to still have quaint charm but is sufficiently big for a good choice of eating and drinking establishments. Is it sounding even more attractive now to you? In addition in Almyrida there are some water sports facilities like windsurfing, snorkeling and canoeing. Shops are dotted here and there in the fishing village for your daytime convenience, but in the evening village life is on the waterfront in the tavernas and bars. The beaches on Crete are well known for their beauty. Almyrida has two gently shelving ones which are perfectly safe for children. The beach is also very good for people with disabilities as it is easy to access from the road. The nightlife offers Karaoke, quizzes, live sport coverage and delicious cocktails, so there is something for everyone to enjoy. There is a Bank in a village 4 km away should you need one, which can be reached by walking along a pathway. This holiday would provide a really nice change from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life perhaps.

Elounda is a small fishing town on the northern coast of Crete. There is another of the very many holiday resorts on Crete here. Elounda is only 12 km away from the resort of Agios Nikolaos. It is a famous tourist attraction, frequently visited by VIP’s for its seaside luxury resorts.

Most of the holiday resorts on Crete offer the same facilities, accommodation and activities. It is for those planning a holiday on the island to take their pick really.

Gouves is yet another destination for holidays on Crete. It is situated in the east of the island. Gouves beaches are excellent and you will find many hotels and apartments there from which to choose your accommodation. Gouves is actually a large area which covers several smaller villages, including the popular holiday resort area of Kato Gouves (lower Gouves) and the traditional village of Pano Gouves (upper Gouves) which is built into the side of a small mountain. This position allows for spectacular views. Those from the zenith are breathtaking. The seaside resort is actually Kato Gouves. It is neither a village nor a town. It is an inhabited area which owes its development to tourism. In addition to all the usual holiday amenities, Gouves has mini golf, bike rentals and a medical clinic. Some of the rocky areas of the beaches at Gouves offer privacy, and there are wave-breakers to give smoother seas. Gouves is also close to the resorts of Stalis and Malia. The famous Crete aquarium is in this area too, and a former American Base, which may well interest you as a historical site. In addition (there are always additions!) there are Water Parks which will make the children happy. In the old village of Pano Gouves you will discover in the narrow alleys many old houses.

The resort of Horafakia is a tiny village with a big heart, about as far from the tourist trail as you can get, but it is a picturesque beauty spot of dusty mountains, seductive sands and brilliant blue skies. Horafakia is not very big but it has great charm. The beach has crystal-clear waters, where you could spend lazy days soaking up the sun.

Istron and Kalo Chorio holiday resorts in eastern Crete, close to the resort of Agios Nikolaos, are in another picturesque area. Accommodation in these resorts is highly recommended. Above the coast there are herb filled hillsides lying between orange groves. Live music is played at a couple of bars in Istron. The paced of life there is really slow. It is perfect and idyllic to take a holiday in Istron and Kalo Chorio. If you like donkeys too – most children do, don’t they – you will come across them in this holiday resort.

The resort of Kamilari is in south Crete. It is another traditional village there. It may not be on the sea but it is only a short distance from the local beaches. There is self catering accommodation in Kamilari which is very quaint and pretty and has a wonderful view of its surroundings. There is an archaeological site only 4 km away, and Kamilari is the ideal base to explore the lovely plain of Messara where there are more traditional villages, rich history and beautiful bays and beaches. The old houses of Kamilari are built of stone, with lovely courtyards, and brilliant bougainvillea climbing the walls. The village of Kamilari is typical of Cretan villages with a small main square, a church and a colorful kafeneia (coffee bar/coffee shop) full of character, frequented by locals and visitors alike. The holiday resort of Rethymnon is not far away. There are many cheap places to stay in Kamilari.

The holiday resort of Karteros is an organized beach area, and here too there is an archaeological site nearby. So many holiday resorts on Crete have archaeological sites nearby, simply because the island has so much history behind it. It is surely a great place to go for holidaymakers who are interested in ancient history.

Lyttos is an ancient Greek site. There was a considerable city there at one time, but Lyttos is now a village and a holiday resort called Lyttos Beach. Crete itself is a great island for site seeing. The resort of Lyttos is relatively newly built and does not have an overly party atmosphere, although you can find this nearly if you want.

Malia is one of the wildest holiday resorts in the whole of Greece. All of Europe’s young people go there on holiday. Once the sun has set Malia comes alive. It has a 5km coastline with some peaceful beaches. Needless to say, it has many, many places to stay with all sorts of accommodation, some with pool bars, DJ sets, pool table tennis and gyms. Many are ideal for young people to enjoy a holiday. A considerable number of hotels and apartments have balconies where holidaymakers can relax in the sun and take in the surrounding views. The staff in this resort are friendly, and there are some pools which have shaded areas around them to rest in. In addition some accommodation sites have lovely gardens with views of the amazing mountains behind and the deep blue sea in front. You could have a wonderful holiday here.

Piskopiano is another traditional old village with a panoramic view of the sea. This village lies on the slope of a mountain, so its very position alone makes for a great holiday resort. Go compare the deep blue sea of Crete with the grey sea of your homeland perhaps. Piskopiano is near Malia. The village itself is very, very pretty. There is a folk museum in this area which could be interesting to see. Piskopiano is surrounded by olive groves, the typical landscape of northern Crete. You could go bungee jumping and horse or donkey riding from this holiday resort amongst the many usual resort activities in Crete.

The resort of Stalis is only 3 km from Malia, but is more suitable for family holidays. The intensive tourist development of this area has resulted in three towns, which include Stalis and Malia, merging into a single coastal holiday resort about 10 km long full of hotels and apartments. Stalis does not share the wild nightlife of Malia however, but you can still have fun on holiday there, just at a quieter pace than that of its neighbor, Malia. Many of us might prefer this.

Corsica

France is divided geographically into ‘regions’, and the Mediterranean island of Corsica is one of these.

Corsica has very beautiful countryside areas, and if you would love the peace of only hearing the sounds of nature in your holiday resort, the resort of Bonicardo would seem ideal for you. You could hide in a labyrinth of mountains and forests for a most romantic escape. Bonicardo would be perfect for a honeymoon perhaps. It is very secluded but there is stylish accommodation on offer for holidays. There is a village only two kilometers away though, and a restaurant a short drive away, so a self catering holiday in Bonicardo would be fine.

For a change of scene, the sea is only a 45 minute drive away from the resort of Bonicardo, and there is also a natural swimming pool three kilometers away. The latter could be a lovely new experience for holidaymakers.

Pianotolli is another excellent holiday resort in France, being in the south of the region of Corsica. In Pianotolli you can find half board hotel accommodation with a beautiful hotel pool to help you enjoy a lovely holiday in France. Pianotolli-Calderello is a little village with a natural harbor and a great curved beach. There are certainly some high class hotels in the resort of Pianotolli, the majority with pools, so a holiday in that resort could be most relaxing.

Corsica is called “l'ile de beaute” (the beautiful island) and not for nothing. This island has lovely beaches, mountainous countryside and quaint old buildings, all of which make a holiday very enjoyable.

Porto Vecchio is a very stylish resort situated on Corsica’s southern coast. The beaches here are idyllic because they are unspoiled, and the mountain scenery behind is breathtaking.

From Porto Vecchio day trips are available to other places of interest in the area, which would make a holiday there more entertaining. The Old Town of Porto Vecchio is quite busy too with lively cafes, bars and restaurants, designer boutiques, hotels and a fantastic marina which attracts yachts from all over the world. In fact, Porto Vecchio is known as the “St-Tropez” of Corsica. It is a highly fashionable destination where holiday visitors can relax, indulge or party the night away. Fancy a great fun skiing holiday or just a holiday with a fresh fresh difference in Finland? A holiday there could be a fairy tale experience. You can even build your own igloo, spend a night in an igloo to see the Northern Lights (the Aurora Borealis) if you are lucky, and you may never in your life see trees laden with so much snow. Everything you see outside of the cities and towns in Finland in winter is spectacular.

In the resort of Levi, there is the Wonderworld of Ice to explore on holiday. This incredible sight must certainly appeal to all ages.

Summer in Finland is great too. The air is so pure, and there are many activities organized to delight the holidaymaker. Finland has a humid and cool semi-continental climate, with warm summers and freezing winters. Surprisingly the warmest days of July and August can be as high as 30 degrees centigrade. The resort of Saariselka is a fairly large winter sports centre high up in Lapland, Finland. There are two fells both equipped with ski lifts.

From Saariselka you can pretty much walk anywhere you want to, but if you have heavy gear in tow, you can just hop aboard the Ski Bus which shuttles between the village and the slopes about once an hour. You could also go snowshoe trekking through the countryside. The views of arctic scenery are breathtaking from higher ground.

Yllas is a large ski resort with the winter wonderland hotel, 18 ski lifts offering holiday skiers in Finland over 1500 feet of vertical descent, and 34 pistes. That’s 18 miles of skiing in total. There are also 175 miles of cross country ski trails in Yllas. So this resort sounds like a dream holiday destination for ski enthusiasts. Folk who go there for a holiday once seem to return time and time again. Apparently they are indeed memorable holidays – in modern well-equipped accommodation too.

The Dominican Republic is a nation on the island of La Hispaniola in the Caribbean region. Dorada is the community which attracts the most ‘all inclusive tourists’ to the North coast and you can be assured of sunshine all through the year in Dorada. Because of the variety of activities available in the resorts, it is easy not to leave your resort area at all, but it would be a pity not to go and see, and do all the amazing things which are very nearby outside of the resort.

Bavaro is a touristic area in the eastern most province. The beautifully white and well groomed beaches are edged with clear turquoise sea. The resorts are completely self sufficient really. The tall palm trees and lush vegetation behind the beaches make the Dominican Republic very picturesque, easy on the eye, restful looking.

Officially the Republic of Cyprus is a Eurasian island country, east of Greece and south of Turkey. It is most definitely a very ancient land with history dating back to the 10th millennium BCE, so on holiday there you would be able to visit many very interesting historical sites.

Cyprus is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea. The island has a sub-tropical climate with very mild winters to hot summers. From May to November average sea temperature exceeds 20 degrees centigrade so Cyprus is perfect for swimming and water sports. The hours of sunshine per day on average are about twice as many as in London. For example in December, Cyprus has as much sunshine as London has in May. Therefore a winter holiday in Cyprus could be a great getaway from the dark cold of Northern Europe.

For enthusiasts of mythology, Cyprus would be a most interesting stomping ground, and art lovers could have a ball on the island.

All the resorts are similar. Ayia Napa is one at the far eastern end of the southern coast of Cyprus. As most of the resorts are, it is renowned for its sandy beaches and as a family holiday resort. More recently Ayia Napa has developed into a party capital with clubs and other venues. The centre of Ayia Napa town, The Square, is replete with high class restaurants, nightclubs and shops. A ten-minute drive away is Cape Greco which is thought to be one of the most beautiful spots on Cyprus. There are sightseeing, cliff jumping and other activities to be enjoyed there.

Coral Bay resort is located in Western Cyprus. It is only a 30 minute drive from Paphos airport, passing through banana plantations and vineyards. Coral Bay is stunning – 600 m of curved beach of powdery white sand awaits you. It is ideal for swimming here and especially safe for children to play as the sea has a shallow margin. Again you can enjoy many water sports including pedalos, banana boats and jet skis on holiday in Coral Bay. Banks, minimarkets, bars and restaurants are near the bay, and buses run regularly to Paphos. There is also a bird and animal park in Coral Bay which would entertain the children, a diversion away from the beach for a change.

You will find the resort of Larnaca on the southern coast of Cyprus. Larnaca is a seaside town with great character, many places of interest to visit, as there are also in the surrounding villages, and lots of things to do while on holiday. The town is set in a wide bay. There is excellent shopping to be had, and the sea front is lined with many al fresco restaurants which specialize in Cypriot food. If the holidaymaker is on a small budget, he can obtain a great value meal from the kebab vendors (the local take-away) very cheaply. Larnaca is interesting. You can hire a sun-bed and umbrella if you feel lazy, want to rest or simply relax, but if you are feeling energetic, daring and brave, you could try a boat trip or hang from a parachute over the sea and be pulled along by a speed boat.

There is horse-riding, sailing, coach trips, diving all available to you in and around Larnaca.

Limassol resort has a marina. The city is located on Akritiri Bay. It is a very large Cypriot port and is well known for its long cultural tradition. Museums and archeological sites aplenty can be visited by the holidaymaker in Limassol. Also there is a wide range of hotels and apartments to choose from in this resort. Limassol is famous in Cyprus for its festivals and fancy-dress balls, and parties are organized in many hotels every night during the ten days duration of Carnival. Limassol is the home of Theo Paphitis of Dragons Den fame.

Limassol from the beach at night is a beautiful place. It would be nice and romantic to go for a walk along the promenade after dark. Here again, whether you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday or would prefer a cultural visit, Limassol is the place to go.

Nissi Bay resort is a few miles west of the harbor at Ayia Napa. It is somewhat more relaxed than that resort, but offers fantastic facilities, a beautiful sandy beach, and nice low-key nightlife. Excellent accommodation is available and a good selection of restaurants, bars, and shopping for those who always need their retail therapy.

A holiday in Paphos, called the Land of Aphrodite, would also give you easy access to archaeological sites. Paphos has the second international airport in Cyprus so is easily reached, making it an excellent holiday destination. This city is steeped in history. It also enjoys amazing weather and has a pretty fishing harbor. The open air cafes delight holidaymakers with the catch of the day.

Pernera is a very clean resort –the beaches are always being cleaned. It is a lovely destination for a chill out holiday on Cyprus. The Cypriot people themselves go to Pernera on holiday so that tells you it is the place to go. This resort has some cute little beaches, lots of things to do (fishing and scenic boats trips to mention only two), many great bars/cafes/restaurants in the area providing great entertainment. There are abundant means of transport to get you around on holiday in Pernera, and the coastal path to walk along. There is also easy access to more things to see and do further afield in Cyprus, so it’s a great jumping off point. For your accommodation there are beautiful hotels with lovely pools if you prefer those to the sea.

The resort of Protaras is another resort with some highly-rated hotels and apartments, and was acclaimed Travellers’ Choice 2011 winner for beaches. As in many areas of Cyprus, horse-riding is available in Protaras, and the sunrise is very beautiful over the bay as it faces south-east. The sea water is so clear here, and after dark Protaras puts on a magic dancing waters show which is quite spectacular. In addition of course, you can enjoy the Greek traditional dancing and music in many of the night spots on Cyprus.

Charismatic Cuba

If palm trees and lots of blue water turn you on, you would do well to choose Cuba for your next holiday.

Cuba is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. It consists of the main island of Cuba plus the Isla de la Juventad and several archipelagos. Havana, a city on the island of Cuba is the capital city of Cuba. The inhabitants, culture and customs come from diverse places such as Spain, Africa and the U.S.A. It may be an authoritarian democracy, but literacy and health have been given high priority there. Spanish is the most common language. Festivals take place at all times of the year, but January to May is the ideal time to visit temperature-wise. Restaurant meals are delicious and incredibly cheap, many dishes being of Spanish origin.

One of the best resorts is Varadero, where, if you are brave and daring you can go skydiving. You would land onto Varadero’s white sandy beach. There are also ultralite flights from the beach.

Car hire is available in the Varadero Airport or through various hotels. Take a ride in a glorious automobile, the old American way. Some hotels organize transfer buses and there is an open-topped bus to town but there are no trains. There is a large shopping mall, restaurants and an open-air market-place. Varadero is in a relatively exclusive part of Cuba, with many private hotels, fantastic beaches and Cuba’s only full golf course. So this could be an ideal choice of holiday destination if you need your golf amongst many other activities. The sea water is warm, turquoise. In fact, Varadero could be your little bit of paradise. Another fun thing, there are motorized trikes called coco taxis available for getting around. These are enclosed and appear rather like car-sized oranges. There are also horse-drawn carriages for hire for a stately ride, plus mopeds to ride throughout town. You can jump on one of these with just a learner’s license even. You will be overwhelmed by the great variety of things to see and do in Varadero, from camel riding for children to cabaret, one of the latter lasting 5 hours! Rest assured you will have a whale of a time on holiday in Varadero.

Guardalavaca is another resort well worth your consideration for a holiday in Cuba. Here too you could enjoy white sandy beaches. Guardalavaca provides the ultimate in relaxing holidays in luxurious hotels, with the excitement of diving and snorkeling to explore the coral reefs and plentiful sea life. After swimming with dolphins, you could go horse-riding. Make your holiday as hectic or lazy as you wish. For a change of scene, drive out away from the beach at Guardalavaca and you will see sugar cane plantations. The countryside is vast, but even the beaches never feel too crowded. The most popular of the Greek Islands for holidays number about fifteen. Corfu is maybe the most well known. There are a vast number of holiday resorts on Corfu, whether you are searching for a romantic holiday for two, a great family holiday, a luxury break, or simply a great holiday deal. Kefalonia is the second largest Greek Island, and is also situated in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of the Greek mainland. Kefalonia has somewhat escaped mass tourism although it has a beautiful mild climate and excellent beaches for the holiday visitor. As on most of the 15 or so, there are good restaurants, taverns, museums and villages to explore. Snow occurs in winter in the northwestern corner of Tunisia, where elevations reach 3,440 ft (1,050 meters). There is great environmental diversity in this country due to its north-south extent. The climate is temperate in the north, with mild rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Besides the president, Tunisians enjoy a significant degree of religious freedom, a right enshrined and protected in its constitution, which guarantees the freedom to practice one’s religion.

Due to its beaches, the town of Hammamet is a popular destination for swimming and water sports. It was the first tourist destination in Tunisia. It is located in the north-east. It is particularly known for jasmine, and that is how the tourist resort of Yasmine Hammamet got its name. All over Hammamet souvenirs of jasmine can be found.

Aruba is a 33 km long island of the Lesser Antilles in the Southern Caribbean Sea. This island lies 27 km north of the coast of Venezuela. Together with Bonaire and Curacao, it forms a group referred to as the ABC islands. Arubans are Dutch citizens. The capital is Oranjestad. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid cactus-strewn landscape. This climate has helped tourism as visitors to Aruba can reliably expect warm, sunny weather. It lies outside the hurricane belt.

Aruba enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean region including a low unemployment rate. About three quarters of the Aruban gross national product is earned through tourism or related activities. The exchange rate of the Aruban florin as of today is 2.82 to £1.

The island has a population of just over 100,000 inhabitants and doesn’t have major cities. There are six main ones, some of which contain beautiful, ornate buildings. Oranjestad shows some fine examples.
